New York hospitals giving patients 16 times the daily recommended dose of vitamin C to fight coronavirus

New York state hospitals have been giving some coronavirus patients large doses of vitamin C to combat the disease.

The New York Post reported Tuesday that some patients in the state were being given does of 1,500 milligrams of vitamin C immediately, with reoccurring doses totaling 16 times the daily recommended amount by the National Institutes of Health.

“The patients who received vitamin C did significantly better than those who did not get vitamin C,” said Dr. Andrew Weber, a pulmonologist and critical-care specialist in New York.

Weber said the treatments were started based on tests done on coronavirus patients in Shanghai, China. “It helps a tremendous amount, but it is not highlighted because it’s not a sexy drug,” he said.

A spokesman with Northwell Health facilities, which operates 23 hospitals in New York, said the vitamin was “widely used” in treating the coronavirus “as the clinician decides,” spokesman Jason Molinet said.

Weber said vitamin C helps the body fight against inflammatory overreaction the body can get from infection when it has the coronavirus.

So far, nearly 15,000 people in New York have confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and at least 131 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
